Union School awarded Grant

Union School has been awarded a competitive grant in the amount of $9.747.00 from The Last Green Valley.

The following three project components continue our emphasis on continuously enhancing our school grounds, while also preserving the history and pride of small town New England.

  • Community Gathering Area - This area will be dedicated to preserving the history of Union while providing a tribute area to memorialize the old school, which was demolished in 2010.  Adjacent to the old school site is the Town of Union Dog Pound site. The Historical Society, along with the town, preserved this area by enclosing it with natural wood fencing and providing an informational plaque.  We will continue to further develop this area of the old school site and create a community gathering place which includes the following: a gazebo, gardens, natural stone walls, fire pit, as well as a brick walkway to the road.
  • Community Fruit & Vegetable Garden - During the past few years, our staff have engaged in developing our science curriculum to align with the Next Generation Science Standards.  As part of this development, we have also utilized our grounds (Rain gardens, solar energy, outdoor classroom, etc.) to extend units for real-world application.  The Community Garden will be an area where students can observe the life cycle of plants and grow fruits and vegetables for use during our PTO-sponsored lunches and other community events.
  • Outdoor Science Lab/Classroom - This is an extension of our existing outdoor classroom.  During the past two years, we have begun building a partnership with the Yale Forestry Division.  Last year, our middle school students, engaged in a guided walk led by Yale University staff in learning about the landscape of The Last Green Valley and how it has been shaped over the years.  This component of our project will add an outdoor lab demonstration area made of stone and provide an area for extensions of science lessons for our students and Yale University staff.

Planning for the project will begin soon! Stay tuned!
